This site is a direct appeal to a group of actors, directors and writers whose careers I have had a direct effect upon. Of course my 'direct effect' has been admittedly small, yet still very relevant and, I would venture to assume, appreciated.

On the list are individuals that I have supported through the years - I've seen your movies, bought your DVDs and related CDs, attended your concerts, read books and articles, bought the merchandise, patronized relevant establishments and heavily promoted your efforts through word of mouth and personal recommendations.

Now, I'm asking for your help in return. I realize it's a bold (and perhaps borderline offensive) way to go about this, but you have to do something to generate interest and cut through the noise. To that end, I suppose any manner of doing so cannot be dismissed. I’ve tried the conventional route to no avail, so at this point I have nothing to lose by trying something different.

Basically, I’m asking you to do for me what I've done for you. And really on the same small scale, relatively speaking. I'm asking for a gift or donation or contribution (whichever term seems most apropos) to help me fund my fledgling career as a screenwriter. I have been writing scripts for over a decade and though I've generated some interest, I’m still struggling to take that next step. To compound matters, as the economy has worsened and my family's needs have naturally become my priority, my dreams of screenwriting have moved from the forefront to the back burner and, in the last few years, into deep freeze where they currently reside. The time and finances that I had once hoped to devote to producing my own short form and feature length films are dedicated to more urgent matters.

Though it may seem to be the case, I’m not trying to play some sad song in search of a handout. What I’m really looking for is someone to offer me what most (if not everyone) on that list have had at one point in their career – someone who would take a chance on an undiscovered talent and give them the means to prove they belong. A small percentage on your part would mean a great deal to me and allow me to do just that. All I need is an opportunity and, as it stands right now, that opportunity can only be funded by the generosity of others. To paraphrase Blanche DuBios, “sometimes we all depend on the kindness of strangers.”

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Jimmy Barringer
